East Preston itself is a large rural area which is located in eastern Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, in Atlantic Canada. It was founded in the 17th century. The name of the area came from a reverend called Richard Preston who started two churches which are still located in this region.

East Preston used to be part of a much larger community called Preston before it was separated into two, East and North. A road still exists that connects the two villages of East Preston and North Preston.

East and North Preston together are the largest indigenous black community in Canada. To a degree, East Preston is still a predominantly a Black community but as the demand for land has risen and the city of Halifax has grown, many people from other areas have decided to join the community.

East Preston is accessible off of Highway 7 or No 207 on Marine Drive through the Ross Road or the Mineville Road.
